How to answer “Tell me about yourself”
This question is an invitation to give the interviewer a useful starting point—not your full biography. A strong answer connects your recent work, the strengths most relevant to the role, and why this opportunity makes sense now.
What the interviewer is evaluating
They are listening for relevance, clarity, self-awareness, and whether you can connect your experience to the role. They are not asking for every job you have held.
Recommended structure
- Present: your current professional focus.
- Past: one or two experiences that built relevant skills.
- Future: why this role is the logical next step.
Answer template
I’m currently [role/focus], where I [relevant responsibility or outcome]. Before that, I [relevant experience] and developed [relevant skill]. I’m now looking for [type of opportunity] because [specific connection to this role/team].Example
“I’m a backend engineer focused on reliable, customer-facing services. In my current role, I work on APIs that support our onboarding flow, and I recently led an effort to make failures easier to diagnose. Earlier in my career I worked across product and infrastructure teams, which taught me to balance delivery speed with operational quality. I’m interested in this role because the team is solving similar scale and reliability problems, and I’d like to contribute closer to the product decisions.”
Common mistakes
- Starting with unrelated personal history.
- Listing responsibilities without an example or outcome.
- Giving a generic reason for applying.
- Memorizing every word until the answer sounds rehearsed.
Practice follow-ups
“What project are you proudest of?” “Why are you looking now?” and “Which part of that experience is most relevant here?” Practice answering each with one concrete example.
